Fraunhofer CCPE invites industry partners to participate in the “GINA – Odor Scavenger for Industrial Applications” project
Improving the quality of recycled plastics through innovative odor scavengers is the focus of the “GINA – Odor Scavengers for Industrial Applications” project run by the Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Circular Plastics Economy CCPE. Industrial partners are invited to actively participate in this forward-looking project and benefit from valuable expertise.

Odor scavengers, play an important role in improving the material properties of plastics. As part of the “GINA – Odor Control Additives for Industrial Applications” project, researchers at the Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Circular Plastics Economy CCPE are developing and testing innovative additive formulations. The focus is on characterizing these formulations and their direct application in recycled plastics. The goal is to reduce unpleasant odors and improve the overall quality of recycled materials.
Analysis and odor evaluation
Comprehensive analysis and odor evaluation are central components of the research work. The CCPE scientists use various methods to achieve this:
- Human sensory tests to evaluate odor properties and reduction
- (Online) emission measurements to analyze volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including odorants
- Quick tests to evaluate emission reduction directly on the unprocessed additive
- Analytical methods that examine the effects of additives and their interactions with the polymers used
Stabilization, recyclability, and further processing
Another focus is on the stabilization and recyclability of plastics with odor scavengers. The researchers take into account the aging and stability effects of the materials in multiple extrusions to ensure that the solutions developed are not only effective but also recyclable.
